I just found you through a recommendation by Liz Bucar here on Substack. I’m about to read the Harvard Psychedelic Club. From the synopsis it seems like you do not include Stanislav Grof in your story of the early, wild days of psychedelic research.

I found his BPM concept incredibly helpful for making sense of what I experienced on several psilocybin journeys. I’m glad to hear of academic research being done in psychedelics, and I wonder if you’ve ever studied Grof and his ideas.

Thanks so much for this series, Don. I think one of the fascinating things about a cult is that when you read about it from the “outside,” you think that the people who got drawn into it were terribly blind and naive. You think smugly that you couldn’t possibly fall for such a thing. Yet you know that millions of intelligent, educated, well-meaning people do, investing insane amounts of money in their quest. I think we are all need to learn from this all too human susceptibility. And it’s all around us in the political landscape.
